How BSL 1.1 works in practice
Release version: v0.53.0
Change Date: BSL 1.1 converts to Apache 2.0 on 1 April 2029. After that date, historical releases become Apache 2.0 — no separate licence needed.
Production use: Any commercial or production environment requires one of the paid tiers above. Non-production use — development, research, internal evaluation — is permitted under BSL 1.1 itself.
Verification: Release archives and container images ship with SLSA provenance, CycloneDX SBOMs and cosign signatures — steps in Reproducibility & Supply-Chain Verification.

Licensing FAQ
Answers to the common questions.
Do I need to pay to try Wardex?
No. The Community tier is free for up to 10 endpoints and covers evaluation, research, homelab and non-production use. Paid tiers are only required when you run Wardex against live business operations.
What exactly counts as "production" use?
Any environment where Wardex is monitoring or protecting real business operations, customer data or live workloads. If a SOC depends on it to detect real attacks — that's production.
Is the product the same across tiers?
Yes. Every tier ships the same binary with all detection engines, SSO/SAML, RBAC, audit logs, HA reference guidance, air-gapped distribution, the full admin console, the complete API, and YARA/Sigma rule packs. Tiers differ on endpoint count, support SLA, and commercial support model — not on feature flags.
Do you see my telemetry?
Never. Wardex is 100% self-hosted. Agent events, alerts and analytics stay in your infrastructure. We don't operate a cloud backplane — there is nothing to phone home to.
Is Wardex truly open-source?
The source is fully open, readable, forkable and modifiable. BSL 1.1 is source-available with a time-locked conversion to Apache 2.0. It's not OSI-certified open-source during the BSL window, but it's functionally open for every use case except commercial production deployment.
Can I switch tiers or cancel?
Yes. Monthly plans cancel at any time — you keep the right to run the version you licensed for the remainder of the period. Annual plans renew yearly. No lock-in — the source stays yours.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes. Academic, non-profit and early-stage startup discounts are available. Annual prepay is ~17% off monthly. Email us with context and we'll reply within 48h.
What happens after the Change Date?
On 1 April 2029, every Wardex release up to that point converts automatically to Apache 2.0. Commercial tiers continue for newer releases, support and SLAs — but the core becomes traditional open-source.
